Taxation of Investment Products and Income

What is it about?

This workshop is aimed at anyone who wants to understand how investment products and vehicles are taxed. This workshop will cover how investment income and gains are taxed in various structures, such as Collective Investment Schemes, Exchange Traded Funds, REITs, Endowments, Sinking Funds, Second Hand Policies, Retirement Funds, Tax-Free Savings Accounts, Retail Bonds, Wrap Funds as well as direct asset ownership.

We will also look at how the income and capital gains of these vehicles are taxed when received by various entities who own them, such as individuals, companies, PBOs and trusts.

We will look at the regulatory architecture and definitions of each of these vehicles with examples showing the effect of tax on investment returns.

The various investment products available to investors
How income is taxed within the product and exiting the product.
How capital gains are taxed within the product and exiting the product.
Practical examples how income and gains are taxed in different types of investors.

Outcomes of the workshop

On completion of the program the learner will be able to:

Understand the types of investment vehicles such as endowments, REITs, TFSA and retirement funds.
Know the legal rules and restrictions of each investment vehicle
Distinguish between asset class and investment vehicle and advise suitability thereon
Understand how income and capital gains are taxed within investment vehicles and on exit of the fund

Paul is the founder of Lightbulb Learning and Training, which specialises in providing training for financial planners for formal qualifications, regulatory examinations, professional competence and the FPI Board Exams. In 2007, Paul was awarded the prize for top Advanced Post-graduate student in the country for both modules. He is the managing editor of the SA Financial Planning Handbook, SA Financial Planning Case Studies, Fundamentals of Financial Planning, Legislation Handbook and Preparatory Guide for RE 1 & RE 5, all published by LexisNexis. He is passionate about the education, transformation and professionalism of the financial planning industry. He has been a guest speaker at numerous events. Paul is also the founder of The Assembly Improv South Africa which provides facilitation in long-form improvisational comedy, team building and applied improv for developing financial planners’ communication skills. Paul has completed CFA level I and the Psychology of Financial Planning Specialist™ course. He is a Fellow of the South African Institute of Financial Markets and serves as a Governor on the SAIFM board.

Marius Botha

Marius Botha CFP^®, B.Iuris (UPE), Tax Law Programme (UNISA), Trustee Diploma Institute of Bankers, LL.D (Honorary Doctorate) University of the Free State

Marius started his career as an estate administrator and will draftsman with a trust company over 40 years ago. He then joined a life assurer as a legal advisor and later became manager of the legal training department. He has been an independent consultant for over 30 years and has specialised in training financial intermediaries and preparing candidates for the CFP^® competency examinations. He has been the editor of the LexisNexis quarterly journal Insurance and Tax Journal since 1995. He is also one of the co-authors of Fundamentals of Financial Planning and annually updates the LexisNexis publication Corporate and Personal Financial Planning. He has spoken at various seminars over the years.

CPD

CPD for FAIS purposes
This workshop provides verifiable CPD points in terms of the Determination of Fit and Proper Requirements for Financial Services Providers, BN 194 of 2017, provided that the content is appropriate for your role within the company. A certificate of attendance will be issued that could be submitted to your company’s compliance officer. The number of verifiable CPD hours will be up to 3 hours.

CPD for SAIFM members’ purposes
This workshop provides verifiable CPD points in terms of the CPD policy of SAIFM provided that the content is appropriate for your current or future role within the company. A certificate of attendance will be issued, which should be retained and submitted should you be selected for a SAIFM member CPD audit. The number of verifiable CPD hours will be up to 3 hours.
