Job Specification: Stock Market Trader

Reports To: CEO / Managing Director

Job Summary

The Stock Market Trader is responsible for executing buy and sell orders in financial markets on behalf of clients, analysing market trends, managing risk exposure and identifying profitable trading opportunities across equities, ETFs, CFDs, derivatives and other financial instruments. The role requires strong analytical ability, discipline, market knowledge, and the ability to perform under pressure in fast-moving market conditions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor local and international financial markets, economic news and market sentiment.
  • Analyse market trends, technical indicators, company fundamentals and trading volumes.
  • Execute trades efficiently and accurately in accordance with mandate guidelines and risk parameters.
  • Execute trades efficiently and accurately in accordance with client instructions.
  • Develop and implement trading strategies for short-term and long-term opportunities.
  • Manage and monitor trading positions and exposure limits.
  • Maintain compliance with exchange regulations, company policies and financial legislation.
  • Produce daily, weekly and monthly trading and performance reports.
  • Liaise with trading platform providers and clients where required.
  • Monitor stop-loss levels and manage portfolio risk.
  • Identify arbitrage and market inefficiencies where applicable.
  • Maintain detailed records of all trades and trading rationale.
  • Stay informed on geopolitical developments, interest rates, corporate actions and economic data releases impacting markets.

Minimum Requirements

SAIFM Examinations –

  • The Regulation and Ethics of the South African Financial Markets
  • Introduction to the Financial Markets
  • The Equity Market
  • The Derivatives Market

Completed or currently studying JSE Traders Examinations.

Strong understanding of:

  • Equity markets
  • ETFs
  • CFDs and derivatives
  • Technical and fundamental analysis
  • Risk management principles

Experience with trading platforms and market data systems (Velocity, IRESS, IBKR, TradingView).

Proficient in Microsoft Excel and financial analysis tools.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong risk awareness and discipline.
